Michael McCarthy

USGA Executive Committee

Michael McCarthy of San Francisco, Calif., is serving his fourth year on the Executive Committee, and first of his second three-year term.

McCarthy is a lifelong golfer, competing at an early age in Northern California junior events. He earned his B.A. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was a member of the 1988 golf team that won the NCAA Division I championship. McCarthy currently serves on the board of his hometown San Francisco Golf Club, and he was a longtime board member of the First Tee of San Francisco, where he helped start the program in conjunction with the restoration of Harding Park Golf Club. Still competitive, McCarthy qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in 2010.

McCarthy concluded a 34-year career with Franklin Templeton Investments in early 2026. He retired as Executive Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Franklin Equity Group, having led the Franklin Small Cap Growth strategy. His leadership legacy at the firm includes a nine-year tenure as Chief Investment Officer (2015–2023) and 13 years as the group’s Director of Research. McCarthy is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.

In 2026, McCarthy will chair the Championship and Nominating committees. He will also serve on the USGA Teams Selection, Compensation & Leadership Development and Governance committees.
