Haas
Faces Wolstenholme in Feature
Walker
Cup Match-ups Saturday
Ganton,
North Yorkshire, England Bill Haas, son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas,
will have a lot to say about whether or not the amateur golf team
representing the United States of America has a lead at the end
of the first day of the two-day Walker Cup competition.
Haas,
22, of Greer, S.C., has been given the singles assignment of stopping
reigning British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme, 43, of Market
Harborough, England, who is playing in his fifth Walker Cup Match
for Great Britain and Ireland. He has played on two consecutive
winning GB&I teams and is just a couple points shy of becoming
the leading point-getter in the history of the Great Britain and
Ireland Walker Cup teams. He needs 1½ points to surpass Michael
Bonallack s career total of 8 points. A point is awarded for each
match won.
The
Walker Cup Match is played every other year between two 10-man amateur
teams, one from the United States and the other from Great Britain
and Ireland . A team needs 12 points to retain the Cup, 12½ points
to win it away. There are 24 matches over the weekend; 8 foursomes
matches and 16 singles matches.
In
addition to their singles match-up in the afternoon, Haas is paired
with Trip Kuehne of Dallas, Texas, for the first morning foursomes
match against Wolstenholme and 19-year-old Michael Skelton.
